84 – In these times of obvious global warming and environmental pollution, is it still justifiable to take the plane for all journeys (under 1,500 kilometres)?

What is the core of the problem?

In February 2020, 670 flights per week by two airlines alone departed from Brussels Airport and Charleroi to European capitals, but there are only three weekly night trains in Belgium, which are also difficult to book. In the rest of Europe, too, the offer is very limited. More and more citizens are giving ‘another means of transport’ a chance in these post-coronation times, but the night train network has almost completely disappeared to be still attractive. Since it is (still) a niche theme, the story is only picked up to a limited extent in Belgium, whereas it is picked up to a much greater extent abroad. This is contradictory in times of major climate and environmental issues. We would like a philosophical insight into this.

What would be the impact if this problem were to be fixed?

More awareness and a starting point for further sensitisation.

Why are you submitting this challenge?

Since we are running this non-profit organisation as volunteers, we cannot investigate this fully on our own but would like to help shape it with the students!

In what ways have there been attempts to solve this problem?

As part of a European network, we have already produced our own research report to identify the bottlenecks and offer solutions. The study can be found on our website. We would like to communicate the advantages of this more ecological means of transport.

What are the next steps that need to be taken?

A benchmark between air and rail travel between European capitals and then a philosophical reflection
