What is the core of the problem?

From Brussels Airport and Charleroi departing in February 2020, there are 670 flights to European capitals by two airlines alone, but there are only three weekly night trains in Belgium, which are also difficult to book. In the rest of Europe, too, the offer is very limited. More and more citizens are giving ‘another means of transport’ a chance in these post-coronation times, but the night train network has almost completely disappeared to be attractive. Moreover, the remaining night trains are decades old and no longer adapted to the current requirements of travellers.

What would be the impact if this problem were to be fixed?

The research would help the development of night trains to make them more attractive to travellers, making them an attractive alternative to planes, and making journeys less polluting to the environment.

Why are you submitting this challenge?

As part of a European network, we have already produced our own research report to identify the bottlenecks and offer solutions. The study can be found on our website. We would like to communicate the advantages of this more ecological means of transport.

In what ways have there been attempts to solve this problem?

As part of a European network, we have already produced our own research report to identify the bottlenecks and offer solutions. The study can be found on our website. This should provide a (first) sound basis.

What are the next steps that need to be taken?

An inventory of the (short/medium distance) offer of flights A comparison of travel time, cost environmental impact, employment opportunities…. between air and night train An investigation of the requirements of an offer The formulation of arguments which are the bottlenecks and improvements for a night train network We also see links with other subjects/challenges (see other submissions)
